20p Retain!

Andrea was a Lifeguard in the 80’s and was working her way up through the ranks moving from job to job in new centres in different authorities on a regular basis as we had to do back then.

“ I wasn’t long into my new post - maybe six months or so. I had been a Duty Manager in my previous posting on an “on and off” basis - acting up from time to time - this was my first “proper” job as a young Duty Manager with responsibility for the “Wet Side”

There happened to be a young Lifeguard whom I knew (and still do) and had always found her to be honest, trustworthy and loyal.

I was doing my rounds swinging my keys (as you do) and walked into the changing rooms to find her emptying the lockers of the new 20p’s (which had just come out and we were doubling our locker money income in one fell swoop - you see I did make an impact)

She was opening the lockers, taking all the clothes and contents out and folding them neatly in front of each locker.

The money was also stacked in front of each locker in neat piles and very carefully accounted for.

This was a person you could trust to ensure that the monies were in fact collected safely and accurately.

However - this was NOT the time to be doing it - nor in the way that I knew was correct for this facility.

So I asked her “what the heck are you doing Jocelyn”

She replied, “Peter (another Lifeguard) asked me to get the keys to “fix a locker” and while I was at it to empty the lockers and all the 20p pieces as the staff needed beer money for a night out on Saturday!”

Jocelyn now works on the tills at Tesco!
